4 Tips Before Considering Adoption

August 3, 2015 by Kristen Radford

considering adoptionConsidering adoption? In our world today, there are definitely more than a few ways to build a family. At Throne & Hauser, we’re happy to be part of the family-building process through adoption. We have worked with families and individuals seeking to bring a child into their home and into their hearts. That said, the adoption process can be daunting, so it can be helpful to consider taking a few of the following steps before jumping in.

Research, research, research

No parent is 100 percent prepared for the adoption process, but you can learn a lot beforehand. From online support groups to books, magazines and websites, gaining a good basic knowledge of adoption practices will be helpful in your journey. If possible, meet with other adoptive parents to better understand their experience.

Take some time to think

You’ll need to make a lot of decisions during the adoption process, so it’s a good idea to do some soul-searching beforehand. For example, do you have a preference for the child’s age or gender? Are you open to adopting twins or siblings? What about a special needs child? Do you want a relationship with the birth parents or would you prefer a closed adoption? All of these things will come up eventually, so it’s a good idea to think about it now.

Know the law

Part of knowing what to expect throughout the adoption process means becoming familiar with your state’s adoption laws. This is where an experienced adoption attorney can help guide you through each step and ensure that your rights are protected.

Be realistic

The adoption process can be emotional, and there may be disappointments along the way. Before you start down the road to adoption, it’s important to be prepared to handle whatever joys, frustrations, anxieties or disappointments the process may bring. Have a good support system that can help buoy you up.

Find an expert to help you

Having a professional on your side who knows the adoption process and can guide you through it – while protecting your rights – can make the whole process run more smoothly. Find a good adoption or family law attorney to help you now.
